A tourist who only needs maps and WhatsApp has a different need from a family sharing hotspot all day, a remote worker, or someone staying for a month in a rented apartment.
Before choosing between eSIM, physical SIM and roaming, write down what you need: maps, social media, video calls, work hotspot, train tickets, banking SMS, local calls or support from a real person.
Roaming: easy, but read the cost
Roaming can be the easiest option because your current number keeps working. For EU residents, roaming rules may be friendly within fair use limits. For visitors from outside Europe, daily passes or per-megabyte costs can be much higher.
Always check the total cost for the whole trip, not just the daily line. A two-week holiday can change the calculation quickly.
eSIM: fast when your phone supports it
An eSIM is useful when you want data before or immediately after landing. You usually receive a QR code or activation flow and can keep your physical SIM inside the phone.
The limits to check are compatibility, activation timing, hotspot allowance, network coverage and whether you can get help if setup fails.
Physical SIM: still useful for some people
A physical SIM can still be comfortable for users who prefer in-person setup, older phones, or plans with local voice features. The downside is that you need time to buy and install it.
If you are staying in Italy for longer, or if you also need fiber and home utilities, a human consultation can be more useful than a quick airport purchase.
