Tourist SIM or eSIM in Italy: documents and activation

An eSIM can be convenient when arriving in Italy, but it is not automatically the right choice. Before buying, check whether your exact phone variant supports it, whether the device is unlocked, which documents the provider accepts and what the plan actually includes.

1. Check the exact phone

Look for the option to add an eSIM or cellular plan in settings. Menu names vary between iPhone and Android. Confirm that the device is not locked to your home operator. A phone model may support eSIM in one region but not in every market variant.

2. Prepare identification

An Italian mobile service may require a valid international identity document, personal details, an overseas address, email and digital identity verification. Requirements vary by offer and sales channel. Do not send a passport through a generic chat before receiving the appropriate secure process.

3. Read duration and renewal separately

“Valid for 30 days” may mean that the bundle expires, not necessarily that the phone number immediately disappears. Check automatic renewal, pay-as-you-go charges after expiry, remaining credit and cancellation rules.

4. Roaming is not the same as international calls

Data used outside Italy and minutes used to call foreign numbers follow different rules. Ask how much data is available in the EU, which destinations international minutes cover, and what applies in the UK, Switzerland and non-EU countries.

5. Plan for real travel

If you need maps, rail apps, video calls or laptop tethering, confirm hotspot use and data allowance. Coverage around La Spezia, the Cinque Terre, Massa and Carrara can change indoors, in valleys, at stations and along the coast.
